Beyond Resilience Canada

In Remembrance

In remembrance

Honouring their lives.
Remembering their service.

For first responders across Canada who have died by suicide, during service or in retirement.

We remember police officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency communications personnel, correctional workers and fellow public safety personnel. We honour the lives they lived, the people they loved and the contributions they made to their communities.

Each person was more than their uniform, their role or the circumstances of their death. Their lives hold meaning beyond their service, and their memory belongs first to those who knew and loved them.

To the families, friends and colleagues grieving: your loss matters. This space offers remembrance with compassion, dignity and respect for your privacy.

A remembrance guided by families

This is a collective tribute, not a complete record of lives lost. Individual names, photographs and stories will only be included after information is verified and the family or an authorized representative has given explicit consent, including consent to identify the death as suicide. Choosing privacy will always be respected.

In memory

Constable Hayden James Ryan

March 14, 1996 – August 12, 2026
Durham Regional Police Service

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Durham Regional Police Constable Hayden Ryan at only 30 years of age.

Hayden was a husband, a father of two young children, a son, a brother and a police officer. He was also the grandson of my close friend Terry Ryan.

Years ago, Terry was tragically killed after being struck by an impaired driver in Whitby. He was a good man whose friendship meant a great deal to me. To now see the Ryan family enduring another devastating loss is almost impossible to comprehend.

My thoughts are with Hayden’s wife, Sarah, their children, his parents, the entire Ryan family, and his friends and colleagues at the Durham Regional Police Service.

Behind every uniform is a human being. Behind every loss is a family whose lives are changed forever.

Rest peacefully, Hayden. I hope you and your grandfather have found one another again.
